Event Details

Experience the vibrant energy and heartfelt creativity of the American orchestral tradition. The performance begins at 7:30 PM on Saturday and 3:00 PM on Sunday. Under the direction of Music Director Lee Mills, the Greenville Symphony Orchestra presents a program that pulses with rhythm, jazz-inflected harmonies, and cinematic grandeur.

From Iconic Fanfares to Broadway Masterpieces

The concert opens with Aaron Copland’s definitive Fanfare for the Common Man, followed by the South Carolina premiere of Turbulent Flames by contemporary composer Jessica Meyer. GSO Principal Clarinetist John Sadak takes the spotlight for Copland’s lyrical and virtuosic Clarinet Concerto, a work originally commissioned by jazz legend Benny Goodman.

The journey continues with Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances, leading into the afternoon/evening’s exhilarating finale: Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. This orchestral suite captures the grit, romance, and tragedy of the streets of New York, featuring beloved themes like “Somewhere” and the explosive “Mambo.”

Pre-Concert Conversation

Ticketholders are invited to a free pre-concert talk starting one hour before each performance inside the Peace Concert Hall. Join Lee Mills and special guests for an engaging look at the cultural history and musical themes behind this all-American program.
