A World Premiere Celebrating a Revolutionary Heroine

Experience a landmark musical event as the Greenville Symphony Orchestra presents the world premiere of Dicey Langston: The South Carolina Girl Who Defied an Army. Performances begin at 3:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday, bringing to life the incredible true story of a local teenage hero of the American Revolution.

Local History Meets Modern Composition

Commissioned in honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, this new work features music by South Carolina composer Peter B. Kay and words by Mark Waldrop. The piece tells the story of Laodicea “Dicey” Langston, a teenager from the Ninety Six District who risked her life to spy for the Patriots and warn them of impending Loyalist attacks. To capture the authenticity of her spirit, the project involved workshops with local students and features a teenage female narrator to portray Dicey herself.

A Program of American Resilience

This world premiere is paired with Aaron Copland’s beloved Appalachian Spring, a cornerstone of American orchestral music that evokes the hope and determination of early pioneers. Together, these works celebrate the resilience of the American spirit and the profound impact of local history on our national identity.
