A Choral Exploration of Community and Care
Experience a profound evening of contemporary choral music as the Grammy-winning ensemble The Crossing performs poor hymnal by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. The performance begins at 7:30 PM, conducted by Donald Nally. This concert-length work serves as a reflection on the core of religious and spiritual experiences, specifically how communities agree to care for one another.
A Contemporary Masterpiece
David Lang constructed the text for poor hymnal by stitching together phrases and utterances from diverse sources, including the Old Testament, Tolstoy, and Mahatma Gandhi. Inspired by the New England hymn traditions that influenced Charles Ives, the piece is designed to remind the audience of our shared responsibility to look after “the least among us.” Known for their innovative approach, The Crossing blends traditional choral elements with modern, atmospheric sounds to create a unique, immersive acoustic experience.
