Walhalla Fish Hatchery: Keeping South Carolina’s Waters Alive and Fishing Thriving

Walhalla Fish Hatchery

South Carolina’s Only Cold-Water Hatchery

The Walhalla State Fish Hatchery plays a vital role in sustaining South Carolina’s trout populations and supporting outdoor recreation throughout the Upstate. Operated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), it is the state’s only cold-water fish hatchery and a cornerstone of maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems in mountain streams and tailwaters across the region.

Built in the mid-1930s by the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps, the hatchery remains one of South Carolina’s most historically significant wildlife facilities. It sits in the Eastatoee Valley of Oconee County, about an hour from Lake Hartwell, surrounded by the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

How Trout Are Raised

Every year, the Walhalla Hatchery produces approximately 500,000 trout, including rainbow, brown, and brook trout, which are then stocked in public waters throughout the Upstate.”

From the moment the eggs hatch, trout require careful attention. Hatchery staff monitor water temperature, oxygen levels, and feeding schedules to ensure the young fish grow strong and healthy. Over 14 to 16 months, the trout grow to a catchable size of 9 to 12 inches and hatchery staff release them into the waters.

This process supports a wide network of rivers and lakes, providing South Carolina anglers with year-round fishing opportunities while helping to maintain ecological balance in the region’s waterways.

Supporting Fishing Across the Upstate

The trout raised at Walhalla are released into rivers such as the Chattooga, Chauga, and East Fork, as well as into cold-water tailraces below reservoirs like Lake Hartwell. These stockings enhance recreational fishing throughout the Upstate and make the region a favorite destination for anglers seeking a mix of mountain streams and open lake water.

Even during the warmer months, tailwaters below large lakes remain cool enough to support trout, extending the fishing season and ensuring consistent angling opportunities. The hatchery’s efforts not only benefit local ecosystems but also contribute to South Carolina’s tourism economy through fishing, camping, and outdoor recreation.

A Peaceful Place to Visit

Beyond its conservation work, the Walhalla Fish Hatchery is a beautiful destination for visitors. Families and travelers are welcome year-round to walk along the outdoor raceways, watch the trout swimming in clear mountain water, and learn about the hatchery’s operation through interpretive signs and displays.

It’s also an excellent place for a picnic—there are shaded tables, rest areas, and scenic views of the surrounding forest. A short walking trail leads to the East Fork of the Chattooga River, which offers great fishing access and a cool spot to explore on a warm day.
